“A futuristic device with impressive features”
The Amazon Echo is definitely a fancy speaker that anyone would love to have in their home or office. Actually, the Echo started as a speaker, but ended up as a fully-functional smart device that can help you control your home environment.
This product integrates high technology levels and even has a personality, called Alexa just like Apple has Sir and Android has Cortana. And just like with these 2 well-known tech girls, Alexa is also a good listener and will help you interact with your smart home like no device ever did.
Amazon managed to overpass the limits of a Bluetooth speaker and is light years ahead other products on the market like Harman Kardon Esquire Mini, Creative Sound Blaster Roar 2, or Bose SoundLink Bluetooth Speaker III. While these created a blunt object that only plays music from your phone and sometimes acts as a handsfree, the Amazon Echo is definitely something else.
First of all, you have access to Amazon Cloud, where you can access all sorts of music. Lately, Amazon added support for Pandora and Spotify as well so you’re not limited by the cloud anymore. With the Amazon Echo, the future is one step closer!
Design & Special features
The design is simple and elegant and unlike the Bose SoundLink III and the Creative Sound Blaster Roar 2, the Echo is small and easy to carry around. It won’t fit in your pocket since it is cylindrical in shape, but it won’t take much space wherever you place it.
The complete black finishing with nice blue LED lights that indicate the speaker is working is absolutely amazing and goes well with any interior design setting. The speaker is equipped with WiFi and can connect with your smart home in a matter of minutes. Once the connection is established, all you have to do in order to activate it is speak with it. Say the magic word (“Alexa”) and ask for what you want it to do. For instance, you can ask for the 90s rock hits or the latest headlines on your favorite radio station. However, the device is smarter than this and can serve as a timer, a home environment controller and more.
The Echo speaker is equipped with 7 noise-cancelling microphones that use voice recognition technology. This means that you don’t have to be right beside it in order to make yourself understood. Even more interesting, there is an entire section of skills that this device knows. Stuff like placing orders for you, connecting with the home security system (if compatible), reading recipes, saying jokes, and even letting you know the weather.
However, one downside is the fact that this device doesn’t come with a battery. You must plug it in in order to activate it. This limits its portability so you can’t take it on trips or move it around the office. Actually, this is to be expected since the Amazon Echo is more a device for your home than a simple Bluetooth speaker.
The audio quality is medium to good, but this is to be expected especially when you consider the size of this device. Amazon promises a 360 degree sound experience and packs the Echo with dual downward-firing speakers for a better audio performance. At medium levels of volume, the speaker performs admirably and the sound quality is quite good. However, as the volume level goes up you will hear noticeable distortions and the bass will get weaker.
To the ear of a casual listener, the Amazon Echo does a great job as it will fill a room with sound without being too loud or too punchy. However, if you are the kind of person who wants to hear all the fine nuances in music, you will need to look for another speaker.
- Can be controlled by voice
- It is connected with the Amazon cloud, Spotify, and Pandora
- Can perform other activities
- It sounds great at medium volume level
- If you want to see its maximum capacity, you need to keep it connected at all times
In our view, the Amazon Echo is a technical marvel that brings us closer to the idea of a smart home. The integrated persona is smart and will comply with your requests without too much hassle, making the conversation seem as natural as possible. All in all, the Amazon Echo is a Bluetooth speaker for a modern home.
