“A rugged Bluetooth speaker for the adventurer in you”

Do you often go hiking or camping with your friends? Many do, as this is a fun experience that keeps you close to nature. However, sometimes these adventures would go better with a bit of music, especially at night, when you gather around the camp fire. Here is where the Braven BRV-1 comes in play. This is a rugged Bluetooth speaker that especially made for the outdoors activities.

The design is completely different from the traditional Bluetooth speakers, especially when compared with the delicate Harman Kardon Esquire Mini or the Amazon Echo. From the first time you make visual contact with the BRV-1, you’ll see it is compact and quite easy to fit in any type of backpack. It won’t occupy much space and it’s not heavy either, which makes it an ideal device for the hiker. Even better, it’s water resistant so you can leave it outside without worrying that the humidity might affect its circuits. Still, keep in mind that it’s not completely waterproof.

The basic functionalities it performs are those of a Bluetooth speaker and a speakerphone, but the overall design makes you think more of a pair of high-power binoculars. This happens due to the protective cover that keeps everything inside dry and in place. We actually loved this aspect and the fact that the entire device can be easily hold with one hand and moved wherever you need.

Design & Special features

The design is indeed rugged as the protective cover offers a great grip and the fabric is matte without being slippery. This way, you can actually carry it in your hands while you’re hiking if you want to create some ambiance on the road.

The Braven BRV-1 comes in a few options of color with the main cover being black or white. The combination of basic tones with vivid ones makes it easier to find in the backpack or in the grass (in case you misplace it).

The BRV-1 measures 2.3 x 4.8 x 3.3 inches (height x width x depth) and weighs 12.2 ounces. On one end you’ll see a metallic grill (the color will vary according to your preference) which protects the dual drivers (3W) and a 70mm passive bass radiator.

We already mentioned that the speaker is water resistant, but it’s also shock and dust resistant scoring an IPX5 on the durability scale. The speaker is designed to sit on the 4 rubber feet placed on the bottom side and the sound comes through the side grill. There is also a grill on the bottom that keeps the speaker cool and allows the sound to go through creating a better audio experience.

On the side opposite to the grill, the device has a series of controls and ports that are protected by a lens cap. This way, you keep dust and other particles outside quite easily. To have access to this section, all you have to do is twist the cap off.

The available controls and ports are as follows:

  • MicroUSB that can be used for charging
  • A full-size USB port for charging other devices
  • A 3.5 mm Aux
  • A battery status indicator with LED light
  • A Reset button

Audio performance

When speaking about performance, you have to keep in mind that this is a small speaker and it doesn’t compare with the Bose SoundLink III. Even so, the Braven BRV-1 can pack a punch and can output a great balance with a modest bass and great high-mids and highs.

Still, there is one issue: when you increase the volume level, the passive bass radiator will start to vibrate and you’ll have an extra set of noise added to your music. In the end, the speaker is quite loud so you won’t actually have to increase the volume over 60%.

Battery life

According to the producer, the battery on Braven BRV-1 will hold for about 12 hours of continuous use. However, this varies on how much pressure you put on the speaker and if you charge another device from it or not. Even more, the battery life will wear off after a while.

Final Thoughts

  • Water, dust, and shock resistant
  • Compact and easy to carry on a hike
  • Decent audio quality
  • Good battery life
  • 30 feet range
  • The sound gets distorted at maximum volume level

The Braven BVR-1 is indeed an interesting device that can come in handy in many situations. Its compact, rugged design is great for outdoor parties, but it will perform just as well in the inside space.
