“A small, elegant, and portable bluetooth speaker”

If you’re looking to get both portability and elegance together, The JBL Micro Wireless is probably what you are looking for. The device is about the size of a hockey puck and you can even consider hanging it on your Christmas tree if you want to make it a gift. It’s so lightweight that the tree will be able to support it like any other decorations.

The JBL Micro Wireless is a mono speaker that can be easily moved around and that will impress you with a better sound than you expect. When it comes to speakers of its size we usually tend to believe that the sound will be thin and crappy, and most of the time, we’re right. However, this does pack a bit of energy and manages to impress with a clear sound and even a bit of bass.

Besides the fact that you can actually wrap your hand around it, we loved the fact that you can hang it on a wall or clip it on a backpack and go. The design is also something to consider as there are not so many speakers out there that make you think about hockey.

All in all, we loved its portability and the fact that you can connect more of these together to boost the sound experience. But more about this below.

JBL Micro Wireless colors

Design & Special features

Let’s start with the colors. The one we reviewed promoted the classic black and silver pattern but the JBL Micro is more fun than that as you can get it in green, red, or blue. This mini speaker is only 1.6 inches thick and only measures 3.3 inches in diameter. Even more, it is extremely lightweight at only 4.5 ounces. You can simply slip it in your pocket and go running if you want (although it might be weird).

The top side is covered with a plastic grill that allows the sound to come out clear and powerful. The bottom side is actually surprising as you will discover a hidden plug there. Instead of adding the 3.5 mm jack as an accessory, JLB found an ingenious way to make sure you have it on you at all times: they wrapped it around the speaker and created a hidden space for the plug on the bottom side. This is something we really loved about this little guy!

JBL went the extra mile to create a device that is also portable, simple, and very easy to use. Thus, all the buttons and ports are placed on the outer rim that is usually highlighted in silver. You will find a power button (close to the hook on the top) that can also be used for Bluetooth pairing and a mechanical volume dial that looks very cool on a modern device. The speaker also promotes 2 ports: a microUSB for charging the battery and an audio Aux port that allows you to connect the speaker with devices like laptops, MP3 players, DVD players and others.

When the Bluetooth is active you will see a small blue LED light on the speaker side. When is searching for a device, the light will flicker and it will be steady once the connection is established.

Audio performance

While it is definitely better than the internal speakers of a laptop or an iPhone, the JBL Micro Wireless won’t tear your walls down with bass and loud music. It is a nice device to keep in your car and play audiobooks on, but in terms of music the audio quality is medium. Still, it does deliver a lot better than it is expected to.

Battery life

Considering the size, you can’t expect a large battery. Still, the device manages to keep the fun going for about 5 hours which is very impressive. It actually gets in the same battery range with the Creative Woof 3 and the Beats-Pills.

Final Thoughts

  • Small and compact
  • Easy to use and understand
  • Can be hanged
  • The sound quality is better than expected
  • It is a mono speaker

In the end we actually recommend the JBL Micro Wireless to anyone who needs a portable speaker that is both small and easy to use. However, we don’t recommend it for people who want to hear every sound nuance and a heavy bass, this device simply doesn’t have the power.
