“Introducing the almost-circular wrist computer”
The age of smartwatches began with rectangular, big wrist computers that attracted people’s attention through a bulky design that had nothing to do with the elegance and style that classic watches promote. At almost a year after brands started launching device after device, the Moto 360 is among the smartwatches that combined the traditional circular screen with the new technology.
Even though the Moto 360 gets quite close to the classic shape, the fact that they couldn’t actually implement a fully circular interface (the black bar at the bottom is visually unsetting) made the device famous for being almost fully-circular. This inspired competitors like LG with the G Watch R and Urban models to create fully circular displays that support impressive resolutions and offer great user experience.
Moto 360 manages to offer a unique experience, promoting a classic design and the possibility to customize the watch according to your personality. The starting price is $299.99, but there are stores that can offer a better deal.
Moto 360 was an innovation for the smartwatches market as this was the first device to promote a circular screen. The main idea behind this bold step was to create a wrist computer that can keep you connected to the online world and look beautiful while sitting on your wrist. Motorola tried to get as close as possible to a beautiful, classic watch and they did manage to do that almost completely.
Sadly, there were sacrifices to be made and the result was a bit bigger than a normal watch.
The design allows users to choose from a variety of casings promoting 3 main colors (silver, rose gold or black). The casing is forged out of aircraft-grade stainless steel and when combined with the unique strap models (leather or stainless steel) the result is a beautifully crafted watch.
To fix the initial mistakes, Motorola has released a new Moto 360 that features 3 main sizes:
- 42mm with a 20mm band
- 46mm with a 22mm band
- 42mm with a 16mm band destined to be worn by women
The display is protected by Corning® Gorilla® Glass 3 and promotes a backlit LCD screen. The 42mm size offers a 1.37 inches display at 360×325 pixels resolution and 263ppi density and the 46mm size promotes a 1.56 inches display with a 360×330 pixels resolution and 233ppi density.
Colors and images are quite well represented on the display and brightness is set automatically by ambient light sensors.
Moto 360 is powered by a Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 400 with a speed of 1.2 GHz fact that makes it more powerful than the first version. The watch comes with 512MB of RAM and 4GB of internal storage space that is already being used by the OS.
Regarding power supply, the small version is equipped with a 300mAh battery that will keep it running for one day straight at full power and the big version comes with a 400mAh battery that will also withstand a full day of continuous use. The charging is done wireless, using the included charging dock.
The display is well protected against scratches or wear and tear markings by the, popular by now, Corning Gorilla Glass. Also, the leather and stainless steel strap offers comfort and ensure the watch won’t fall from users’ wrists.
The fact that Moto 360 got an IP67 rating on water and dust resistance means that, if you accidentally shower with it on the wrist, nothing bad should happen. Still, it is not recommended to take it for a swim.
Features & Connectivity
The watch runs Android Wear and can be connected via Bluetooth with devices that run Android 4.3 and above and iPhone running iOS 8.2 or up. The producers warn us that available features might differ between Android phones and iOS ones. The new Moto 360 also includes WiFi capabilities so you’ll be able to access your phone even when outside the Bluetooth range.
The watch comes with integrated accelerometer, gyroscope, and an optical heart rate monitor fact that makes it perfect device for tracking fitness activity. There is a plethora of available apps and the market will definitely grow from here.
