“A futuristic device that keeps you connected at all times”
Samsung Gear S2 follows the example set by competitors (LG G Watch R and Moto 360) and implements the fully circular screen on the second SmartWatch it releases. With smooth lines and a beautiful design, the second wearable device from Samsung innovates through features and equipment.
One major advantage it offers is the size. For those who prefer a smaller device that will feel natural around the wrist, the Gear S2 is perfect. Also, the watch was built with finesse and high attention to details in order to stand out from the crowd of big and bulky Android Wear devices. It is the perfect device to have on you when you don’t want to keep the phone around and due to the Nike + Running and S Health integration, the watch is an amazing addition for active people and for those who want to keep track on their health. You can also use it as a handsfree device while you’re driving due to the S-Voice integration. You will be able to do a Google search or make calls by commanding the watch what to do.
The starting price for this amazing device is $299.99 fact that makes it more accessible than the LG G Watch R or even the Huawei Watch.
Te design is simple, effective and beautiful. Promoting a stainless steel casing in three different colors and elastomer or leather band that matches the casing’s color, the device looks amazing on anyone’s wrist. To match Apple Watch’s Digital Crown, Samsung introduced the rotating bezel that helps users scroll through lists and select the desired item. This is definitely an innovative idea that manages to eliminate the button on the side.
Samsung Gear S2 doesn’t actually try to look like a classic watch as it eliminates the side button and implements futuristic looking watch faces.
Samsun chose a 1.2 inches Super-AMOLED display for their second watch. The fully circular screen displays a 360×360 resolution with 302dpi pixel density. This allows users to visualize images, text and video on a very sharp and clear display.
In order to resist scratches and wear and tear, the display is protected by Gorilla3 glass.
Samsun Gear S2 might be small and look delicate, but it is nothing like this on the inside. The heart and brain is a Dual core processor that runs at 1.0 GHz speed supported by 512MB of RAM. The mix is completed by 4GB storage space used for the OS, installed apps and music.
The 250mAh LI-Ion battery is powerful (up to 36 hours) and the watch is delivered with a small charging dock station. You simply have to place the watch on the charging station for recharging the battery; no wires, no extra ports.
The Samsung Gear S2 has an IP68 rating for water and dust resistance and the Gorilla3 display is perfect for avoiding scratches and cracks from the beginning. The strap is made out of elastomer (besides the leather ones) in order to allow users to use the watch outdoor without problems.
Features & Connectivity
The first thing that makes the Gear S2 different from competitors like Moto 360 and LG G Watch R is the OS. Samsung decided to give up on Android Wear and they implemented their own called Tizen. This makes the watch compatible with most Android operated devices but not with all of them. The feel is certainly different for those used with Android Wear’s graphical interface and it takes some adjusting.
The rotating bezel is another element of innovation that will probably be implemented by other devices to come. It makes the navigation simpler and, on an interface that is rich in content, it is a great help. The connectivity with the phone is realized via Bluetooth, but the watch also supports 3G connectivity fact that allows users to get away from their phones and still be connected to important apps like email and social media.
The main challenge with this watch is to get good apps. Because Samsung uses a different platform, it’s difficult to attract developers on their side.
- Simple & beautiful design
- Rotating bezel for navigation
- 3G connectivity
- Perfect fit for active people
- Wireless charging
- Proprietary OS with few apps
- No auto ambient lighting settings
- Low battery life
The Samsung Gear S2 is a definite improvement compared with the S1 version. A smaller screen with more functionalities and a new method for scrolling through content make the S2 an innovation in the world of smartwatches. The device promotes a simple and elegant design and implements high-quality materials.
