“A smart vacuum cleaner for A smart home”

The iRobot Roomba 980 is the ideal vacuum cleaner as it will do the job on its own, without any guidance or effort from the owner. It’s actually quite interesting to have the possibility to simply press on a button and leave, only to return to a clean house and a job well done.

Considering the technical aspect, the vacuum cleaner only has the possibility to clean one floor (it can’t climb stairs yet) and can be controlled via WiFi, using your Android or iOS device. What’s even more amazing is the fact that this little robot is capable of recharging (by its own!) when needed and resuming the job until everything is spotless.

The robot combines many of the latest technologies available like WiFi connectivity and interactivity with an app, visual localization (for mapping the area) and adaptive navigation. Considering that this machine is one of the most modern pieces of technology, the price is set accordingly. So if you want a state of the art vacuum cleaner in your home, you will have to empty your pockets of about $900.

Type & Design

The iRobot Roomba 980 is exactly what it says:  a robot. To be more exact, this is an automated floor cleaner that can be controlled remotely via an app installed on an Android or iOS device.

The design is pretty interesting for a vacuum cleaner, but not exactly new. The iRobot Roomba 980 is round and has two main brushes that rotate and one on the side that helps it spin. The start button is located in the center of the device and has a metallic finishing so you can’t miss it.

What’s in the Box

The package contains all the necessary elements such a device needs to function properly: the robot itself, the charging station and the rechargeable battery, one line cord, extra filter and side brush, and 2 Dual Mode Virtual Wall Barriers with batteries for when you want the robot to stick to a certain area.

Handling & Usability

The iRobot Roomba 980 handles rather well. You can either start it manually, by pressing the big, shiny button on its back, or you can use the phone to start it remotely. The app also allows creating a schedule for the robot, 7 days a week.

This vacuum cleaner can be used on both hardwood floors and carpets due to the Carpet Boost feature that makes the device clean harder when it detects something else than floors. It is also great on edges due to the Edge Clean feature for cleaning around the perimeter and looking for any debris.

iRobot Roomba 980

The robot performs quite well in doing its chores and has the possibility to communicate with the app or directly with the user and say what’s wrong (bin full, area too tall, and more). It also has the capacity to climb low shelves and other low areas so make sure to install the virtual wall barriers where you don’t want this small thing to wreak havoc.

Sadly, the cleaning performance is not as high as we might have expected, especially in the kitchen area. It does a great job with collecting pet hair and it does work harder on carpeted areas. Another problem users might feel uncomfortable with is the small bin (only 0.6 liters). It also tends to get cluttered with pet hair (and human) and this will trigger a “full bin” warning even when it’s not the case.

The iRobot Roomba 980 has a longer-lasting lithium ion battery that allows it to clean continuously for about 2 hours before it needs to go and charge itself. Of course that, if it reaches a carpet or a more difficult area, the battery life will be lower.

According to users, the iRobot 980 is pretty loud and having the possibility to start it while you’re not at home is actually a fantastic feature. Of course, cats and dogs might not agree.

Final Thoughts

  • It reaches well under furniture and chairs
  • It respects the virtual boundaries
  • It has the capacity to find its docking station
  • It can be controlled remotely using an app and an Android or iOS device
  • The cleaning performance is not perfect
  • It is loud

The iRobot Roomba 980 is an interesting device with some nice features that revolutionize the world of appliances. Still, it doesn’t manage to offer a perfect performance and the small bin somehow sits in the way of the whole remote cleaning idea.
