“Great performance and high-tech design in one powerful vacuum cleaner”

With the apparition of automatic machines like the iRobot Roomba 980 and now the Samsung Powerbot VR9000, home cleaning starts to feel less and less like a chore and more like a video game where the user gets to control remotely a powerful machine.

Samsung Powerbot VR9000 implements a sturdy, futuristic look and a big brain under its black and white cover. This machine is created to be very intelligent and requires very little human interaction after all the settings have been completed.

Is a machine like the Samsung Powerbot VR9000 something we really need? Maybe not so much, but the idea of having your own personal automated floor cleaner is very tempting. Who wouldn’t like to start the vacuum cleaner when they get out of the door at work and find the house spotless? Well, the machine is easily programmable and has an optic camera mounted on top that allows it to see where is going, thus creating a map and following it. Still, is it worth paying about $700 on it?

The price is a bit steep and the initial listing price was even steeper given the fact that the Samsung Powerbot VR9000 as firstly listed at $1000.

Type & Design

The Samsung Powerbot VR9000 is a sophisticated piece of machinery that is programmed to clean floors and carpeted areas using suction. The Powerbot can be included in the category of future home robots that will be helping us with our chores in the near future.

The design is futuristic and promotes full transparency using a copper colored turbine that attracts the attention and a transparent cover that allows users to see everything that’s happening inside. In comparison with its direct competitor, the iRobot Roomba 980, the Powerbot is bulkier and more expressive, showing power and innovation. Still, this may be a disadvantage, because the Powerbot is taller and will have a more difficult time sliding underneath the furniture.

What’s in the Box

The package contains only a few items, but these are enough to get the Powerbot running. So, the box contains the Powerbot itself (already mounted and ready to go), one extra sponge filter, one remote control with AAA batteries and one cleaning tool.

Handling & Usability

Actually, once the settings are done, there is very little handling to be done. The robot knows what to do and it does it pretty well. The settings can be done either via the touch screen installed on the top panel or using the included remote control. Even though the settings are pretty easy to understand, a first time user might need some help from the user manual.

All the Powerbot devices are set on Auto Clean mode (standard) but there are other modes that could fit your situation better. Everything is thoroughly explained in the manual. The remote control is a lot easier to use and access all the functionalities.

The cleaning performance is pretty satisfying and all the available cleaning modes make it a versatile automatic vacuum cleaner. Due to its sensors and camera mounted on top, the vacuum cleaner manages to create a map of the room and feels when it reaches an edge. Also, it is quite capable to move around obstacles and tip toe around small debris like toys and devices left on the floor.

The power suction is quite good and the Powerbot behaves well on both hardwood floors and carpets. Just like the iRobot Roomba 980, the Samsung Powerbot VR9000 is capable to find its charging station, recharge and resume the work until everything is considered clean.

The Cyclone Force implemented by Samsung allows for a better separation between debris and dirt, thus keeping the suction power constant. Also the motorized brush is large enough to allow for fewer moves and less battery consumption.

The noise level is quite supportable and it won’t bother anyone in the room.

Final Thoughts

  • Futuristic design
  • Great performance at cleaning floors and carpets
  • Behaves well with pet hair
  • Knows how to recharge itself
  • Not too noisy
  • May be too tall for some pieces of furniture
  • The display settings can be difficult to understand

The Samsung Powerbot VR9000 is an interesting device that comes with some pretty nice features. Still, the steep price makes it difficult to access for people living on a regular budget. Otherwise, the innovative engine and powerful filters make it a very hard working and efficient little robot.
