“Starting the path to Virtual Reality”
Oculus Rift is the one product that can be mistaken with the idea of Virtual Reality (VR). Oculus was the first company to actually take the technology to the next level and they were the only ones bold enough to offer people a new perspective on gaming, watching videos or even online browsing.
The possibility to actually step into another reality and experience it first hand is amazing and Oculus opened the door to this world with their VR headset called Rift. After they paved the path others joined and now we have more options like: HTC Vive, PlayStation VR, Samsung Gear VR, or LG 360 VR. Still, Oculus Rift will always be known as the road opener of the VR industry.
Design & Accessories
The design is pretty classic in most VR headsets, but the details are the ones that actually make the difference. For instance, the front side is covered with a smooth, high-quality rubber while the lenses are surrounded by a material that will feel comfy on your face. Also, the straps are adjustable so you can find that optimum fit on your head. Without this feature, you wouldn’t be able to enjoy the real VR experience since it completely depends on how you position the screen in front of your eyes.
You’ll also notice 2 earpads on each side of the chassis. These are the earphones that will engage your audio senses into 3D surround experience. However, if you don’t like the pads, you have the option to use your own headphones.
The connection with the PC is done through a wire that goes through the rear of your Rift, and comes down your back. This way, when you’re standing or sitting, these wires won’t be in the way.

Step Into Rift
The Oculus Rift is equipped with one USB port and one HDMI port while the tracking camera has its own USB wire cable. The installation is super-easy, but you need to take into consideration the fact that you might have to unplug your monitor since most PCs have only one HDMI port.
The Rift must be connected to a powerful gaming rig in order to have the necessary power to display the 1080×1200 virtual resolution. By powerful, Oculus means at least an Intel Core i5 processor with 8GB of RAM memory and a video card like AMD Radeon 290 or NVIDIA GTX 970.
One cute thing is that you don’t need an ON/OFF button. The Rift is smart enough to light up when you put them one and shut down when you put them down.
To make the gaming experience even more interesting, the Oculus Rift is accompanied by the Xbox One controller and the Oculus Remote. The gamepad is designed for playing games, but most users say it feels too stiff for a VR game, and the remote can be used to browse through videos, adjust the volume, and browse in general.
The performance in games and videos is absolutely amazing and this speaks a lot about the level of technology Oculus implemented. Also, the headset does track your movement pretty accurately, even if you turn at 180 degrees. However, it doesn’t have the technology to track the hands, which is a bit disappointing.
Regarding content library, there is a dedicated store where you can download some pretty interesting names like the EVE Valkyrie or ADR1FT. Still, if you’re not hooked on the available games, you can go looking on other sites as the idea of VR caught on with other producers as well. So, now you can actually play Minecraft with a pair of Oculus Rift!
VR looks like a lot of fun, but it’s something you need to build tolerance to. The very first time you will be using a VR headset (regardless of brand), you will feel sick as the brain is trying to adapt to a new world. Still, after a few tries, everything will be normal.
- Comfortable fit
- Lightweight and easy to wear for hours
- They possibility to use your own headphones
- Great content library
- You must make sure the fit is just right for a complete experience
- The controllers are a bit stiff
The VR experience is indeed a fantastic way to express yourself and try new sensations. The Oculus Rift offers us the high-quality immersion we want and keeps us on the tip of our toes with great content. Still, the headset can be improved even more so we’re looking forward for the next version.
